First, know what type of music you want to write. I write a lot of punk. Every single good sounding riff already exists, so don't worry too much about copying here and there. You are going to no matter what you do. This is especially apparent with 50s rock. Those songs were essentially the same, and they had very common (and good) chord progressions. Take A-G for example. You hear it all the time. You hear C-G#-E-F# a lot too, more commonly a half step up. Learn how to play a lot of old doo wop songs and you will know what sounds good and what doesn't. You'll learn what chords go with what to create a certain tone. With this knowlege, you can take existing riffs that work with others and put them together to form a song. If you don't want to do that, than try to create something yourself knowing what goes with what. You'll get good at it eventually. |

- the only answer i have for you is if you take the beat from your favorite song or a song you like very well, and put your song with it, it will be easer to put your song together and you can see how long the song is, and then after you have your song and it sounds good with the beat, you can add your own beat and make little adjustments. |

Rhyming songs are stupid, they often have no meaning and they are cheesy. what i do is i take a notebook everywhere i go and when i have an idea i draw a story on it or i draw the lyrics for example: (as the rose dropped) i would draw a rose. and later i would just convert the pics into words and edit them. then i would figure out the music to it. |
