Question: Do you write lyrics or music first when writing a song?

I'm trying my hand at writing a song for my band, but all i have in mind are lyrics. do you write the music first and then put in the words or write music once the lyrics are down? i don't want to do this wrong and then have to start over.

I definitely start with lyrics, it's just like writing a poem then adding a tune. But you have to match the lyrics with the type of song you want. A happy tune doesn't match depressing lyrics, or vice versa. Here are some things to consider before starting your band's lyrics: - The style of your band. Are you a rock band or a country band? Or a pop band? The style of the band should match the tune, and the tune should match the lyrics, which should match the style of the band - The meaning of the lyrics. Is it a song about a man who needs to find his place in the world? A boy who wants to be noticed by the pretty cheerleader who doesn't really know he exists (Or so he thinks...) ? Figure that out and the melody should come naturally. - The pace of the song. Is it a dance alternative song? That would have a pretty fast pace and a heavy beat. A pop band could have a more ballad-y type song, so they could have a slow pace and a pretty melody that flows. - Your personal interests. Do you want your band singing and playing these words? What music do you want to focus on playing and being known for playing? I hope this helped! I wish you luck on your band and all music you write! Just one question, though. How long have you guys been together and what's your genre? :) <3 *

Lyrics first... then start with the melody, add the chorus ect... then have you & your band get together to come up with the beats. hope that helps!

Write the lyrics first, make sure you include whatever chorus, bridge, or refrain your going to. Then play with the chord progression until you have something you like, and something that works well with the words. Then play the chords and sing your words, a melody will slowly find its way to you.

I write the lyrics first and think of a tune in my head while writing it down.

It's a matter of preference.

Write poetry, and alter it [chorus ect] to match a song set up. Then work on the main melodies and parts of the music slowly tweaking both along the way.
