How to write songs like they did 30/ 40 years ago? In music we have to do a lot of composition and song writing. I am good at writing original songs (songs about lamp posts and fire extinguishers) and they are quite catchy if I may say so myself. But these songs are more for comical reasons. I love 70s and 80s music, and if you look at the lyrics (this is going to sound well cheesey) but they are very complex and from the heart. almost as if the songwriters had not thought about the words they were writing. How can you write songs like David Bowie and Queen and Elton John and Alice Cooper and all the rest of the brilliant artists that were mainly in the 70s and 80s?

Do lots and lots of cocaine and after that, do lots and lots of heroin. Then sit down and just write, if you can. :) Oh by the way when you write don't think about writing just write whatever comes to your mind. people say that only certain people know how to write well. I don't agree, I think anyone can write, you just have to write and write and write. Do a lot of reading as well, study other lyricist and read poetry, you'll get it.

Well... 1. Alice Cooper was a major alcoholic; 2. Elton John doesn't write lyrics: Bernie Taupin wrote all of the lyrics for him in the 70's; 3. David Bowie and Freddie Mercury are (were) simply highly intelligent human beings who wrote lots and lots and lots of stuff before they began turning out "brilliant " lyrics.

Quite simply, most 80's music had no meaning whatsoever. The lyrics were random, and usually about much of the same garbage you hear on the radio today. Lost love, forbidden love, and sometimes just the opposite, as in the song, "Love Stinks ". Some songs were just plain stupid, like Kajagoogoo's "Too shy " or the Cars' "You might think ". It's difficult to say "how " to write these songs, but I would suggest searching lyrics on Google to get some ideas.

If your talking about lyrics strictly, you just need to experience life a bit more and the influence will come to you. We can't help you or you'll be right in saying it doesn't come from the heart.

You have to try and not force yourself to sit down and come up with lyrics. it has to come to you. and when that happens, don't think of it as lyrics to a song, start it off as a poem. That's how under the bridge by the RHCP started out and it has great lyrics. and it'll probably be hard at first, but soon it'll be easier and you'll be writing songs all the time.
