The way music composition is taught in college, songs or pieces of music are analyzed. What key is it in? What chords from that key are used? Does it modulate to other keys? Do all the notes come from the key, or are other scales used? Those and a ton of other questions help you to understand how the music works, and why it works. You can write completely by ear. Thing is, there are a zillion choices your ear won't give you unless you know more about music. You might come up with something that seems to work, but sometimes just a little more information can make your ideas just be the best. So when you are ready, take lessons with guitarist that are also composers or songwriters, or anyone who is able to coach you, even if they aren't guitarists. When you get to high school, I hope they will offer music theory classes. They did in my high school, but that was a long time ago. I don't think they have enough money for the Arts anymore. Not when there's football fields that need mowing. The Beatles learned how to write songs by spending years playing songs written by professional songwriters. So play as much as you can, find friends to play with, and play different styles of music so you get a bigger picture of how songs work. Keep at it and you will succeed. No doubt about it! |
