How do you write songs as a band?

Question: How do you write songs as a band?

(Posted by: Stargirl on 2010-02-06 07:39:41)

Me, my sister and my friend from school have formed a band. We've been together for a while but haven't made much progress. In the last 8 months, i've been writing my own songs and i'm pretty proud of them. But when the others try to join in or sing it, they get it wrong, I get frustrated and it gets scrapped. Are there any tips of helping in this situation on how to get the band to work together more successfully. I'd be happy to do all the singing and the guitar, but i would feel i was taking over. Any help would be great. Thanks.

Are they contributing to any of the songs at all? They will feel left out. More importantly, can you teach them how your song goes without blowing a gasket? Patience is a virtue.

I agree with dodge. You HAVE to be patient, you can expect them to grasp the song like that *clicks fingers* If only it were that easy. Dont be mad with them because you aren't explaining the way the song is. Sing/ play it to them first, let them get used to it, jeez. -nito

The easiest way, in my opinion, is to sing it while playing guitar or bass to everyone else in the band. Everyone should then play along with you. If there is a different singer, you can build on it and make it better while you practice. You aren't taking over by singing and playing guitar. You are just trying to show them the song!

Basically you go along to your band with your chord progression and lyrics with the right attitude. That attitude is nothing is right or wrong. Just jam the chords and mix it up beats wise, listen to how the others are going and what they're contributing. Then start throwing in your lyric melody. It will grow by itself. After a wehile, what feels right give it a rest and come back to it later. If its going to work you'll know and keep practicing it. The main thing is not going in there and telling everyone how its going to be. You're a team otherwise you're not and you wont last.
