Songs usually written in major are happy songs since a major sounds bright. sad songs are written in minor since they sound dark and depressive why does a major sound happier? because it has a 3rd although not every piece of sad music is in minor, Under The Bridge is a good example of a sad song written in a major key.

Probably because most rock musicians never learned more than 3 chords, G, C, D. Seriously, I imagine because it is safe, most won't take a chance, and it does have a wider mass appeal. Everyone thinks that songs are supposed to sound like that. A friend of mine was trying to get a book published once. He said he was having a hard time because there was nothing on the shelves like it and publishers just wanted recycled book ideas, I guess the same could apply to songs?
