Ha ha, grammar fascist guy misspelled a word. I love it when that happens. I generally don't write stuff like that, but a while after I started dating my wife I got so happy that I decided I wanted to write her a love song, kind of a la Blur and what I did is just threw a bunch of happy images and statements about how much better I felt now that I was with her into meter and ran with it. Aside from the hook the lyrics, though it is definitely better if they are good, are kind of secondary. Really the trick with pop stuff is in the melody and in the music itself. One key trick that a buddy of mine who took a songwriting class pointed out to me is that there must be a significant melodic change between the verse and chorus and a third if there is a pre-chorus (note: prechoruses are a great opportunity for a sort of gear shift in the song or to smooth up a transition). This, of course is not a 100% thing, but for the beginner this is something to keep in mind. If you're into the recording thing I think around 90% of hit songs contain a tamborine track. And probably the most important thing in a pop song is the chorus has to stick. There has to be a catch factor to it. The most successful pop tunes are the ones that get stuck in your head. |
