Write the poem first. Read it aloud to get a feel for the rhythms that might go with it. How does the poem make you feel? Sad= slower, more minor key and interval , and happy= faster, more upbeat, chord resolution. Use words that have more vowels to make singing easier.

Well, choosing words that rhyme or closely sound alike is always good. Also, words such as "whisper " mimic the sound of a whisper, so using onomatopoetic words will make a song flow.
