Any tips for guitar song writing?

Question: Any tips for guitar song writing?

Please note before answering: I'm not writing lyrics So don't post anything about that. I am writing an instrumental song using my guitar. I want to make songs that sounds something like Fade To Black by Metallica. If anybody has any tips or tricks or hints to help me it would be appreciated. Everytime I get a good riff the song always seems to get fucked up or i can't continue writing the song because it just sounds terrible and the riff sounds like its been used so i trash evry song i write because i suck at writing instrumental songs. AGAIN I AM NOT WRITING THE STUPID LYRICS plz help out a fellow guitarist XD

Start by deciding what emotions you want to evoke from the listener. Fade to Black is a C#m progression this gives the song its initial sad tone. Once you decide the progression you want to use you can use a scale that co-responds to that progression. Remember that music, especially instrumentals, are about melody not just running through a scale. They are about bringing about a certain emotion in a listener. Also don't worry too much if it sounds like a song that has already been made. Progressions are common but you can make it your own with the way you use the melody. If you need help with chord progressions or scales for those progressions go to all-guitar-chords.com they are really helpful I use them a lot.
