Help with song writing?
I've been trying to write songs recently. I love the style of Taylor Swift's songs as they are very meaning full and well written. I would love to be able to write like her but find it difficult at times. I know you should have inspiration and write from experience, but when I come to actually write about it, I can't put the words together in a way that sounds good or meaningful. I love the song 'Tim McGraw' by Taylor and it's songs like that I want to write. If anyone has any advice on song writing, I would love to hear it, especially advice about putting the song together. E.g. choruses, refrains, how to start, what order to write the song in etc. In case any of you are wondering, I own both a guitar and piano so please don't say write with them. Thank you so much and please help me to improve x
I need some tips / pointers on Jazz song writing and techniques.?
Hello there,I've been playing the guitar don't laugh for about 7 years. I've been teaching myself general music theory, enough to grasp various playing styles and stay at an advanced skill level. One thing that has always either gone right over my head, or just been tough for me to get a hold of, was Jazz guitar. I like traditional jazz, but I have always had a taste for Fusion music. I am a huge fan of The Faceless under appreciated musicians due to their 'genre' and newly to Allan Holdsworth Incredible, btw . Anyways, I understand improvisation over chords, and I've done improv. over very basic chord progressions. II, V, I , usually using the natural and harmonic minors. I feel that these chord progressions combos are lacking in emotion and expression, and are too cookie cutter for what i'm trying to achieve in my song writing. I love how vibrant and sometimes enigmatic Keene The Faceless andHoldsworth can make their instruments sound. Now, I've been looking into odd chord voicings and various jazz chords. I am really liking where these are going, but they leave me to a few questions 1 When choosing chords for a progression, I know the first chord will have it's corresponding scale scales, but will the next chord that I choose to follow that have to fit into the same exact scale as the previous chord? For example, a Dm7 fits into the D natural minor, would the next chord have to fit into D natural minor too, or could I branch out and select other scales to compliment the sound? I've read about " chord scales" from Holdsworth, and i'm not sure if that was just a technique or how it's done in general. 2 It goes hand in hand with the previous question, and may be answered by it, but when improvising over chords, is it viable to switch scales when a chord key change happens? I haven't had a partner to jam along with recently enough to try that out. Say, changing keys from Gm to Cmaj7. Could I play G natural minor for the Gm, and then switch to a C major scale for the C?Here are a few examples of playing styles I idolize, if that can help at all Keenes worth youtube.com watch?v YzkpqSxMSEUHoldsworth youtube.com watch?v uJF5zB7YcXcForgive me to for typing so much, these questions have been gnawing at me for quite some time. These might be very elementary questions, but I just cannot seem to find an answer if there even is one .Thank you very much for your responses in advance.
